May 31 – Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repression and Famine

May 31, 2024

This date has been celebrated in our country since 1997. The famine of 1931-1933 became an unprecedented tragedy in the history of mankind in the twentieth century. The mass repressions of 1937-1938 did not spare our people. In Kazakhstan, the leaders of Alash were the first to be arrested. They were accused of “nationalism”. As a result, the flower of the nation, Alikhan Bokeykhanov, Zhakyp Akbaev, Alimkhan Ermekov, Sanzhar Asfendiyarov, Akhmet Baitursynov, Beyimbet Maylin, Magzhan Zhumabaev, Abdulla Rozybakiev, Turar Ryskulov, Mukhamedzhan Tynyshbaev, Ilyas Zhansugurov and many others, were arrested and shot. Today’s research shows that more than half of our people died as a result of famine and political repression. And 200 thousand Kazakhs migrated to other states. In Kostanay, the preserved historical and revolutionary monument “Red Execution Wall”, which is located in the courtyard of the ancient building “People’s House”, reminds of those cruel events. This is the place where Red Guards, party and Soviet workers were executed in 1918-1919. The red wall is a fragment of a barn on the site of a merchant estate. The red wall is made of ordinary clay bricks. Traces of executions, holes and dents left by weapons are still clearly visible on the surface of the wall.

On May 31, 2024, teachers, staff and students of the Kostanay Social-Technical University named after academician Zulkharnay Aldamzhar visited the historical and revolutionary monument “Red Execution Wall” to honor the memory of the victims of those tragic days in the history of our country.
